Yoga in Rishikesh for Beginners: Where to Start (2026)

New to yoga? How to start in Rishikesh: drop-in classes, 3–7 day retreats from $100, a 100-hour beginner course from $275, best styles, seasons and areas.

Quick answer: where should a beginner start with yoga in Rishikesh?

Start small. If you have a few days, take drop-in classes. If you have a week, book a short all-inclusive retreat. If you want to go deeper, a 100-hour or 200-hour teacher training welcomes beginners too. At Swaastik Yog School in Tapovan, drop-in classes run Monday to Saturday with no booking needed, retreats cost $100 to $250, and the beginner-friendly 100-hour course starts at $275.

  • 1–3 days: drop-in classes. Just turn up, mats provided.
  • 3–7 days: a retreat with stay, three sattvic vegetarian meals a day and daily classes.
  • 2–3 weeks: a 100-hour (14 days) or 200-hour (22 days) teacher training.

Disclosure: Swaastik Yog School wrote this guide, and our classes, retreats and courses are among the options it describes.

Every week, someone messages us with a version of the same question: "I have never done yoga. Is Rishikesh too much for me?" The answer is no. Rishikesh is one of the best places in the world to begin, because almost every street has a class, and teachers here are used to complete beginners.

The hard part is not finding yoga. It is choosing. This guide explains the three main ways to start (classes, retreats and teacher training), which one fits how much time you have, and what to know before you arrive in 2026.

What are the ways to start yoga in Rishikesh at a glance?

Beginners in Rishikesh can start with drop-in classes, a short retreat or a foundation teacher training. The right choice depends mostly on how many days you have.

Is Rishikesh a good place for complete beginners?

Yes. Rishikesh is a very good place for complete beginners, because classes are everywhere, cheap to try and taught by people who see new students every day.

Rishikesh is often called the yoga capital of the world. Schools and studios line the Ganga, from Tapovan and Laxman Jhula to Ram Jhula. You can try a class in the morning, walk by the river in the afternoon and join the evening Ganga aarti at sunset. Nobody expects you to touch your toes.

The only thing that catches beginners out is doing too much too soon. Two classes a day plus a hike plus new food is a lot for a body that is still getting used to India. Start with one class a day and add more when you feel ready.

Which drop-in yoga classes suit beginners in Rishikesh?

Gentle Hatha and pranayama classes suit beginners best, because they move slowly and explain each pose and breath.

Our drop-in timetable in Tapovan is built so a beginner can pick a class at almost any time of day:

TimeClassLevelDays
7:00 – 8:00 AMPranayama and breathworkAll levelsMonday – Saturday
7:00 – 8:15 AMEarly morning Hatha yogaAll levelsMonday – Saturday
8:15 – 9:30 AMHatha yogaAll levelsMonday – Saturday
12:30 – 1:30 PMAerial yogaBeginner friendlyMonday – Saturday
5:00 – 6:30 PMEvening Ashtanga-style flowAll levelsMonday – Friday

No advance booking is needed. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, tell the teacher about any injuries, and we provide the mat. For first-timers, I suggest the 8:15 AM Hatha class: the sun is up, the body is warmer and the pace is gentle. Current prices and passes are on our drop-in classes page.

Should a beginner book a yoga retreat or just take classes?

Book a retreat if you want everything organised for you. Take classes if you want freedom and already have a place to stay.

A retreat removes the daily decisions. Your room, your meals and your classes are all in one place, and there is a rhythm to the day that is easy to follow. That is restful if you have only a few days, or if this is your first trip to India.

Our retreats run for 3, 5 or 7 days on our Tapovan campus. Each includes accommodation, three sattvic vegetarian meals a day, daily Hatha yoga, pranayama, guided meditation and Himalayan excursions. They are open to all levels, and no yoga experience is needed. Prices are $100 for 3 days, $200 for 5 days and $250 for 7 days. Dates and room options are on our yoga retreats page.

Drop-in classes suit you better if you are travelling around, staying with friends, or want to try several schools before you choose one. Many people do both: a few drop-in classes first, then a retreat or course once they find a teacher they like.

Can a beginner do a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

Yes. A beginner can join a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh. Our 100-hour course is made for beginners and needs no prior experience, only a willingness to begin.

"Teacher training" sounds advanced, but a 100-hour or 200-hour course starts from the basics: how to stand, how to breathe, how to sit for meditation. You do not need to teach afterwards. Plenty of people take a teacher training simply to understand yoga properly.

  • 100-hour course (14 days, from $275): our foundation course, made for beginners and people short on time. It covers Hatha and Ashtanga basics, pranayama, meditation and philosophy, and it counts toward a full RYT 200 later.
  • 200-hour course (22 days, from $440): the full Yoga Alliance RYS 200 course. It starts on the 5th and 15th of every month, and includes stay, two sattvic vegetarian meals a day (brunch and dinner), materials and the certificate.

At Swaastik, founder Mayuri leads every 200-hour batch, and Rahul Badoni, our co-founder, teaches philosophy. Batches are capped at 12 students, so beginners are not lost at the back of a crowded hall. If you are weighing this up, read our yoga teacher training for beginners guide for an honest look at how hard the days are.

Which yoga style should a beginner try first?

Hatha yoga is the best first style for most beginners, because it is slow, clear and builds the foundations every other style uses.

  • Hatha: poses held for a few breaths, with time to learn alignment. The classic starting point.
  • Pranayama: breathing practice. Gentle, calming and useful from day one.
  • Ashtanga or Vinyasa: faster, flowing sequences. Great once you know the basic poses, and harder on day one.
  • Aerial yoga: yoga in a fabric hammock. Surprisingly beginner friendly, because the hammock takes some of your weight. Our specialist programme Aerial Rishikesh is one of the very few aerial-only schools in Rishikesh.

When is the best time for a beginner to visit Rishikesh for yoga?

October to April is the most comfortable time for most beginners, with mild days and little rain.

November to February brings cold mornings and nights, so pack warm layers. At our campus the halls are heated and every room has a heated blanket during those months. March and April are warm and lively, and the International Yoga Festival is held in Rishikesh in March. May and June are hot. July and August are the monsoon, with heavy rain. Our guide to the best time to visit Rishikesh for yoga has the month-by-month detail.

Where should a beginner stay in Rishikesh?

Stay in Tapovan or near Laxman Jhula if yoga is the main reason for your trip, because most schools and cafés are within walking distance.

  • Tapovan: quieter, with many yoga schools, cafés and guesthouses. Our campus is here.
  • Laxman Jhula: busy, colourful and close to the river. Good for your first few days.
  • Ram Jhula: near the big ashrams and the evening Ganga aarti.

If you book a retreat or teacher training, your room is included, so you do not need to choose. Most visitors fly into Dehradun airport (DED), about an hour away by car. We can arrange a pickup at extra cost.

What should a beginner bring to a yoga class in Rishikesh?

Bring comfortable clothes, a water bottle and an open mind. Most schools, including ours, provide mats.

  • Loose or stretchy clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, out of respect in a holy town.
  • A refillable water bottle. Many schools and cafés have filtered water.
  • A light shawl for meditation and cool mornings.
  • For aerial class: fitted clothes that cover your underarms and the backs of your knees.
  • Arrive with an empty stomach, or with at least two hours since a heavy meal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do yoga in Rishikesh with no experience?

Yes. Most drop-in classes, retreats and foundation courses in Rishikesh welcome complete beginners. At Swaastik Yog School, our Hatha and pranayama drop-in classes are open to all levels, our retreats need no experience, and our 100-hour course is designed for beginners.

How much does yoga in Rishikesh cost for beginners?

Drop-in classes are the cheapest way to start. At Swaastik Yog School, all-inclusive retreats cost $100 for 3 days, $200 for 5 days and $250 for 7 days, with stay and three meals a day. The 14-day 100-hour course starts at $275 and the 22-day 200-hour course at $440, both including stay and meals.

Do I need to book yoga classes in Rishikesh in advance?

Not for drop-in classes. At Swaastik you can just turn up. Retreats and teacher trainings should be booked ahead, because rooms and seats are limited.

Is a 200-hour yoga teacher training too hard for a beginner?

It is demanding but doable. The days are long, and the course starts from the basics. If you are nervous, a 100-hour course is a gentler first step that still counts toward a full 200 hours.

What is the best yoga style for beginners in Rishikesh?

Hatha yoga is the best first style for most people. It is slow, explains each pose and teaches the foundations that faster styles like Ashtanga and Vinyasa build on.

If you are ready to start, come to a morning Hatha class on our drop-in timetable, look at our 3, 5 and 7-day retreats, or see the next dates for the 100-hour beginner course. Send us a message if you are unsure, and we will help you choose honestly, even if the answer is "just take a few classes first".
