Sound Healing Certification: An Honest Guide to Levels, Costs and Courses (2026)

There is no single official body for sound healing, so what does a certificate really mean? This guide covers the levels, the instruments, what training costs in Rishikesh, online and in the West, and how to judge a course before you pay.

Quick answer: how do you get a sound healing certification?

You take a course with a school or teacher, practise on real people with feedback, and the school gives you a certificate. There is no single official body for sound healing. India, the UK and the US have no government licence for it. So a certificate shows the training you did. It is not a licence.

  • Most schools teach in levels: foundation, practitioner, then advanced.
  • At our school in Tapovan, Rishikesh there are 3 levels (2 days, 2 days and 6 days).
  • Prices run from $220 (Level 1, dorm) to $470 (Level 3, private room), with your room and meals included.

"Is your sound healing course certified?" is a fair question. It is also a tricky one. The honest answer is different from what many websites tell you.

This guide explains what a sound healing certificate really means. It shows you what you learn, what it costs in Rishikesh, online and in the West, and how to tell a good course from a weak one. We also show you our own three levels, with every price.

Written by Mayuri Shewale, E-RYT 500 (Yoga Alliance) and founder of Swaastik Yog School in Rishikesh. I lead the Nada Yoga and singing-bowl modules on our sound healing course, and I personally review every student's sound-bath facilitation before they are certified. Our prices below come from our current published price list. Outside prices were checked against published course listings in October 2026.

Is there an official sound healing certification?

No. There is no single official body that controls sound healing. There is no world-wide exam. India, the UK and the US have no government licence for sound healers.

That means any school can write "certified" on its website. It is true, because the school certifies you. But it does not mean a government or a central board checked the course.

Here is who is who:

WhoWhat they doWhat it means for you
GovernmentsDo not licence sound healers in India, the UK or the USYou do not need a licence to give a sound bath. You also cannot call it medical treatment.
Private sound-therapy associationsMembership groups. Each sets its own rules, such as a minimum number of training hoursUseful if a specific insurer or employer asks for one. Check their rules before you pick a course.
Yoga AllianceRegisters yoga schools (RYS), yoga teachers (RYT) and continuing-education providers (YACEP)It has no "sound healer" credential. A sound course does not make you an RYT.
The schoolTeaches you, tests you and issues your certificateThis is what you actually receive. The school and teacher behind it are what count.

So the real question is not "is it certified?" It is "who is certifying me, and what did they make sure I can do?"

What does a sound healing certificate actually prove?

A good certificate proves three things. You trained with a named teacher. You learned to play the instruments safely. And you led real sessions while someone experienced gave you feedback.

A weak certificate proves only that you paid and watched some videos.

At Swaastik Yog School, your certificate comes from the school and carries my signature as founder. We are a Yoga Alliance registered yoga school, and I am an E-RYT 500. But I will be clear: that registration is for our yoga teacher trainings. Yoga Alliance does not issue a sound healer credential to anyone.

What I can promise is this. Nobody is certified until I have reviewed their sound-bath facilitation myself.

What are the levels of sound healing training?

Most schools split sound healing into steps. The names change from school to school, but the idea is the same.

  • Foundation: you learn the instruments and how to relax yourself and a group.
  • Practitioner: you work one-to-one and learn to plan a full session.
  • Advanced or master: you work with specific needs, bigger groups and different settings.

Our sound healing course in Rishikesh follows this shape. Here is exactly what each level covers:

LevelLengthWhat you learnBest for
Level 12 daysMind entrainment, deep relaxation, sound meditation, group meditation, aura cleansingComplete beginners and anyone curious
Level 22 daysAura strengthening, mind detox, self-healing techniques, sessions for anxiety and low mood, chakra workPeople who want to work one-to-one
Level 3 (Master)6 days (24 hours)Sessions for people living with knee, back and shoulder pain, physical trauma, space and home cleansing, corporate stress sessions, advanced chakra healingYoga teachers, therapists and anyone who wants to offer sessions professionally

Classes run about 4 hours a day, and we adjust them to each student. That leaves time to rest, practise on your own or join a yoga class.

A note on pain and anxiety: sound healing is a relaxation practice. It can sit alongside medical care. It is not a cure, and it is never a replacement for a doctor. We teach you to say this clearly to your own clients.

What instruments will you learn to play?

You do not need any music training. Sound healing is about listening, timing and care, not reading notes. You will use our instruments during the course, so you do not need to buy anything before you come.

InstrumentWhat it is likeHow you use it
Tibetan singing bowls (7-bowl chakra set)Hand-hammered metal bowls with a deep, layered humPlayed around or on the body (fully clothed) and in group sound baths
GongA big, rolling wave of soundGong baths for groups lying down
TingshaTwo small Tibetan cymbals on a cord, with a bright ringOpening and closing a session, and space clearing
Tuning forksSmall metal forks that give one pure toneFocused work near the body or ears
Crystal singing bowlsQuartz bowls with a clear, pure toneMeditation and chakra sessions
Voice and mantraChanting, toning and bija (seed) mantrasOne-to-one and group work, and your own practice

Behind the instruments sits Nada Yoga, the yoga of sound. It is the old Indian idea that sound and vibration can lead the mind into stillness. You learn to listen inwardly as well as to play. If you want to go deeper into chanting first, read our guide to the power of mantras. For the benefits side, see our sound healing therapy guide.

How much does a sound healing course cost in Rishikesh?

At our school, the price depends on your level and your room. Every price includes your room for the length of the level, sattvic vegetarian meals, use of all instruments, course materials and your certificate.

LevelLengthDormShared roomPrivate room
Level 12 days$220$295$355
Level 22 days$260$355$390
Level 3 (Master)6 days (24 hours)$355$445$470
All 3 levels10 days$835$1,095$1,215

Prices are per person in US dollars. The "all 3 levels" row simply adds up the three list prices. Ask us how to fit the levels together for your dates.

The rooms are the same as on our yoga teacher trainings:

  • Dorm: 4 people, single-gender, washroom shared by the dorm.
  • Shared room: 2 people, single-gender (never mixed), attached washroom.
  • Private room: just you, attached western bathroom and hot water.

Rishikesh vs online vs a course in the West: which is better value?

There are three main ways to train. Each one suits a different person. Here is an honest side-by-side.

Typical price$220–$470 per levelFrom about $100 for a short beginner course to well over $1,000 for a full online certificationAbout $700–$1,300 for one weekend or module; longer certificates often cost $1,500 or more

Online and Western prices are rough ranges for tuition only, based on published course listings we checked in October 2026. They change often, so always check the school's own page.

Our honest view: you can learn the theory online. But you cannot learn to feel a singing bowl over video. Where to place it, how hard to strike it, how a person's breathing changes when the gong builds: these skills need a teacher beside you.

Also be honest with yourself about hours. Our levels are short and focused. Some Western programmes run for 100 hours or more over several months. If a certain association, insurer or employer wants a set number of hours, check their rules before you book any course, including ours.

Coming from abroad? Many students use India's 1-year e-Tourist Visa, which costs US$40 for most countries. Our India visa guide for yoga students walks you through it step by step.

How do you judge a sound healing course before you pay?

Ask every school these questions. A good school answers them clearly. A vague answer is a warning sign.

  1. Who teaches, and for how long have they taught? Ask for a real name, not just "expert facilitators".
  2. Who issues the certificate? If they say "internationally accredited", ask "by which body?" and check that body's own website.
  3. How many hours are hands-on? Most of your time should be spent with instruments in your hands.
  4. Will a teacher watch me lead a session and give feedback? If not, the certificate means little.
  5. How big is the group? Small groups mean more time on the bowls and more feedback.
  6. Do you teach safety? A good course teaches when to change or skip an instrument, and when to send someone to a doctor.
  7. What exactly is included? Room, meals, instruments, materials, taxes? Get it in writing.
  8. Does the school make medical promises? If a course says sound "cures" illness, walk away.

Our answers: you are taught by our founding faculty, not visiting facilitators. Groups are small. I review your sound-bath facilitation before you are certified. And everything you get is listed in the price section above.

Who is a sound healing course right for?

From the students we see in Tapovan, it suits:

  • Yoga teachers who want to end classes with singing bowls or run sound bath evenings.
  • Massage therapists, counsellors and coaches who want a calming add-on for clients.
  • Retreat and meditation leaders who want an easy way into stillness for restless groups.
  • Personal seekers who simply want to go deeper into their own meditation. Many Level 1 students come only for themselves.

It may not suit you if you want a medical or clinical qualification. Sound healing is a wellbeing practice, not a health profession.

Travelling alone? Many of our students do. Our school is women-led, with female staff on campus. You can read more on our women-led yoga school page and in our guide to whether Rishikesh is safe for solo female travellers.

Can you combine sound healing with yoga teacher training?

Yes, and many students do. The most common pairing is our 200-hour yoga teacher training followed by Sound Healing Level 3.

  • You pay the 200-hour price plus the Level 3 price for your room type.
  • Your stay simply extends by 6 days.
  • You leave with two certificates and a practical extra skill to offer in your classes.

Sound fits naturally at the end of a yoga class, during Savasana or in a separate evening session. If you want to understand the yoga credential itself, read what RYT 200 means.

When are the batches, and how do you book?

Sound healing batches run in two windows each month: the 2nd to the 8th, and the 24th to the 30th. The live dates are always on the sound healing course page.

To hold your seat, you pay a 10% deposit. The rest is paid when you arrive at the school. For example:

BookingPriceDeposit (10%, rounded down to the nearest $5)Paid on arrival
Level 1, dorm$220$20$200
Level 3, shared room$445$40$405
Level 3, private room$470$45$425

You can pay the deposit by card link, PayPal or bank transfer. To start, fill in the short registration form and choose your level. Students may move in the day before the course starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sound healing certificate recognised internationally?

There is no international body that recognises sound healing certificates, so no certificate is "officially" recognised everywhere. What counts is the school and teacher who issued it and the skills you can show. Employers and clients care far more about how you lead a session than about a logo.

Is your sound healing course Yoga Alliance certified?

Swaastik Yog School is a Yoga Alliance registered school for yoga teacher training, and Mayuri Shewale is an E-RYT 500. Yoga Alliance does not issue a sound healer credential, so no sound healing course makes you a Yoga Alliance "sound healer". Your sound healing certificate is issued by our school and signed by Mayuri.

How long does it take to become a sound healer?

At our school, Level 1 takes 2 days, Level 2 takes 2 days and Level 3 takes 6 days (24 hours). All three levels add up to 10 days. Some Western programmes run for 100 hours or more over several months. After any course, regular practice on real people is what makes you good.

How much does a sound healing course in Rishikesh cost?

Our prices run from $220 for Level 1 in a dorm to $470 for Level 3 in a private room. Every price includes your room, sattvic vegetarian meals, use of the instruments, course materials and your certificate. Taking all three levels costs $835 in a dorm, $1,095 in a shared room or $1,215 in a private room.

Do I need to know music to learn sound healing?

No. You do not need to read music or play any instrument. Sound healing is about listening, timing and care. Complete beginners start at Level 1.

Do I need to buy my own singing bowls?

Not for the course. You use our instruments, including a 7-bowl chakra set, a gong and tingsha. Many students buy their own bowls after training, once they know what they like the sound and feel of.

Can I start at Level 2 or Level 3?

The levels build on each other, so most students start with Level 1. If you already have sound healing training, message us with what you studied and we will tell you honestly which level fits.

Is sound healing a medical treatment?

No. Sound healing is a relaxation and wellbeing practice. It can support people alongside medical care, but it does not cure illness and never replaces a doctor. A good course teaches you to say this clearly to your clients.
