  • Typical Rishikesh price: about $1,300 to $4,250, median around $2,000 (approx.)
  • Credential: RYS 500 certificate, then RYT-500 after 100 teaching hours

Disclosure: Swaastik Yog School wrote this guide and is one of the schools listed.

Most people who search for a 500-hour course are asking one big question: should I do it all at once, or step by step? I have led many 200, 300 and 500-hour batches in Rishikesh since founding our school in 2015, and the honest answer is that it depends on your time, your budget and how you like to learn.

This guide covers everything you need to decide for 2026 and 2027: what the course is, how long it takes, what it costs, how RYT-500 registration really works, what a day looks like, who it suits, and how to choose a school. Full details and live dates for our own course are on the 500 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh page.

What is a 500-hour yoga teacher training?

A 500-hour yoga teacher training is a 200-hour foundation course and a 300-hour advanced course taught together as one program. You start with the basics of safe teaching and finish with advanced asana, deeper philosophy, therapeutic yoga and real teaching practice.

You do not need any earlier training to join. Complete beginners with a steady personal practice and experienced practitioners both start on day one together.

At our school, the course covers Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga. The main subjects are:

  • Asana: 50+ Hatha postures from beginner to advanced, the full Ashtanga primary series, inversions and arm balances, with alignment and modifications for every level.
  • Pranayama and shatkarma: yogic breathing, Nadi Shodhan in all ratios, Bhastrika, Ujjayi, Bhramari, breath retention, and cleansing practices such as neti.
  • Anatomy: all main body systems, biomechanics, injury prevention, and energy anatomy (chakras and the five elements).
  • Philosophy: the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the eight limbs, the Bhagavad Gita and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
  • Ayurveda and yoga therapy: the doshas, diet, and therapeutic sequencing for common problems.
  • Teaching methodology: sequencing, verbal and hands-on adjustments, ethics, the business of yoga, and practice teaching with feedback.
  • Meditation: mantra, trataka (candle gazing) and Yoga Nidra.

Still deciding between a 200-hour and the full 500? Our post on the difference between 200-hour and 500-hour yoga teacher training answers that one question in detail.

How long does a 500-hour YTT take in Rishikesh?

A 500-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh usually takes 50 to 60 days of full-time study. Our course is 51 days and starts on the 5th of every month, all year.

For example, the batch starting 5 November 2026 ends on 25 December 2026. The batch starting 5 January 2027 ends on 24 February 2027. Winter batches are comfortable: from November to February our halls are heated and every room has a heated blanket.

Plan for close to two months away from home. Add a day or two on each side for travel. The nearest airport is Dehradun (DED), about an hour from Rishikesh by road.

How much does a 500-hour yoga teacher training cost in Rishikesh?

A residential 500-hour course in Rishikesh typically starts at about $1,300 to $4,250, with a median of around $2,000, based on our August 2026 survey of 10 Rishikesh schools' advertised starting prices. Our own price is $880 in a dorm, $1,650 in a shared room and $2,200 in a private room, all-inclusive.

Swaastik prices from our live course schedule, checked 20 October 2026. Market figures from our survey of 10 Rishikesh schools' published starting prices, collected 22–23 August 2026; our school is not included in them. Prices change, so confirm with the school.

When you compare prices, check what is inside the number. Our fee covers the training, your room, sattvic vegetarian meals, the course manual and materials, mats and props, weekend excursions and your certificate. Flights, visa, insurance, airport pickup and personal spending are extra at almost every school, including ours.

The biggest price lever is your room, not the course. A dorm in a bamboo cottage with bunk beds costs far less than a private room with an attached bathroom, but the classes, teachers and certificate are exactly the same.

Is a 500-hour YTT worth it, or should you do 200 then 300?

A combined 500-hour course is worth it if you are sure you want to teach, can take about two months off, and want the lowest total cost. Doing a 200-hour first and a 300-hour later is better if you want to test teaching before committing, or cannot take that much time away.

Honest considerations. Fifty-one days of 6:00 AM classes is a lot of learning in one go. Some students feel tired around week four. You also leave without classroom experience, so the 100 teaching hours come after the course. If you would rather teach first, our 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh is open to anyone with a 200-hour certificate from any Yoga Alliance school, and our 300-hour guide explains that route.

The upside. The second half builds on habits from the first half while they are still fresh. You stay with the same teachers, so nobody has to re-learn how you move. And you save money and one long-haul trip.

How do you become RYT-500 with Yoga Alliance?

To register as RYT-500, you need 500 hours of training from a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School plus at least 100 hours of teaching after your 200-hour or 500-hour training. There is no such thing as RYT-300; the 300-hour course gives you an RYS 300 certificate that you combine with your 200 hours.

There are two training routes:

  1. One 500-hour course at an RYS 500, such as our 51-day program.
  2. A 200-hour course plus a 300-hour course, each at a school with an active RYS 200 or RYS 300. They can be at different schools.

Then the steps are simple:

  1. Finish your training and get your certificate.
  2. Create a Yoga Alliance account and add your trainings. Your school confirms them.
  3. Teach at least 100 hours and keep a simple log: date, place, class type and hours.
  4. Apply for RYT-500 and pay Yoga Alliance's fees (check the current amounts on their site).

You can register as RYT-200 right after the course while you build your teaching hours. Our guide to what RYT 200 means covers every Yoga Alliance level, and is Yoga Alliance certification worth it looks at when the credential matters and when it does not.

You can check our registration on our Yoga Alliance school profile. We are RYS 200, RYS 300 and RYS 500.

What does a typical day look like on a 500-hour course?

A typical day on our 500-hour course runs from a 6:00 AM Hatha class to dinner at 8:00 PM, with a long rest and self-study break in the middle of the day.

TimeSession
06:00 – 07:15 AMHatha yoga
07:15 – 09:00 AMPranayama and shatkarma
09:00 – 09:30 AMBrunch
09:45 – 10:45 AMAlignment and anatomy
10:45 AM – 12:00 PMAshtanga yoga
12:00 – 03:30 PMRest and self-study
03:30 – 04:45 PMAdvanced yoga class
05:30 – 06:30 PMMeditation
07:30 – 08:00 PMMantra chanting
08:00 – 09:00 PMDinner

Timings can shift a little with the season.

Philosophy, Ayurveda and teaching methodology rotate into the theory slots as the course moves on. In the second half, you teach more and more yourself: first to a partner, then to small groups, then to the whole class, with feedback each time.

Weekend excursions around Rishikesh are part of the course, and you get a weekly rest day to do laundry, sleep and walk down to the Ganga, which is a short walk from our garden campus.

Who is a 500-hour yoga teacher training for?

A 500-hour course suits people who already know they want to teach yoga seriously and have about two months free now. In our batches, students usually fall into these groups:

  • Career changers who have decided to teach and want the full training in one go.
  • Gap-year and sabbatical students who have the time now and may not later.
  • Dedicated practitioners who want depth in philosophy, pranayama and anatomy, not only a certificate.
  • Future retreat leaders and studio teachers who want RYT-500 on their profile.

Who should think twice? If you have never practised regularly, a few months of steady classes at home first will make the course much more enjoyable. And if you are not yet sure you want to teach, start with our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh. You can always add the 300 hours later.

How do you choose the best 500-hour yoga teacher training in India?

The best 500-hour yoga teacher training in India is one where the school holds RYS 500 with Yoga Alliance, the lead teachers are named E-RYT 500s who actually teach your batch, and the price clearly includes your room and meals. Use this checklist before paying any deposit:

  1. Check the Yoga Alliance directory. Search the school's name and confirm RYS 500 (or RYS 200 and RYS 300) is listed and active.
  2. Ask who teaches your batch. A famous founder is no help if they rarely enter the hall. Ask which named teachers lead which subjects.
  3. Ask the batch size. Fewer students means more hands-on adjustment and more feedback on your teaching.
  4. Read the real price. Is it all-inclusive? Are rooms on campus? Which meals are included? Is pickup extra?
  5. Ask for the daily timetable. A good school will show you the exact hours, not only a list of subjects.
  6. Ask how much you will teach. Practice teaching with feedback is what turns knowledge into confidence.
  7. Think about the season. Rishikesh is hot in May and June, wet in July and August, and cold in the mornings from November to February. Ask about heating and cooling.
  8. Read recent reviews that name teachers. Reviews that describe real classes and real people tell you more than photos of the river.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a 500-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

Most 500-hour courses in Rishikesh take 50 to 60 days of full-time residential study. At Swaastik Yog School the 500-hour course is 51 days and starts on the 5th of every month. For example, the 5 November 2026 batch ends on 25 December 2026.

How much does a 500-hour YTT cost in Rishikesh?

Advertised starting prices for a 500-hour course in Rishikesh range from about $1,300 to $4,250, with a median of around $2,000 (approx., confirm with each school). At Swaastik Yog School it is $880 in a dorm, $1,650 in a shared room and $2,200 in a private room, all-inclusive of training, stay, meals, materials and certificate.

Do I need a 200-hour certificate before a 500-hour course?

No. A combined 500-hour course includes the 200-hour foundation, so you can join without any earlier teacher training. You only need reasonable health, a regular personal practice and the commitment to attend all 51 days. If you already hold a 200-hour certificate, take the 300-hour course instead.

Am I RYT-500 as soon as I finish the course?

Not straight away. Finishing gives you a 500-hour certificate from a Registered Yoga School. Yoga Alliance also asks for at least 100 hours of teaching after your 200-hour or 500-hour training before you can register as RYT-500. You can register as RYT-200 in the meantime.

Is there an RYT-300 with Yoga Alliance?

No. Yoga Alliance has no RYT-300 credential. A 300-hour course gives you an RYS 300 certificate, which you combine with your 200-hour training. With those 500 training hours plus 100 teaching hours, you can apply for RYT-500.

Is it cheaper to do the 500-hour course or the 200 and 300 separately?

At our school the combined 500-hour course is cheaper: $880 in a dorm versus $1,100 for the 200-hour and 300-hour booked separately, saving $220 (or $385 in a private room). You also save a second trip to India. Doing them separately does let you teach before the advanced course.
