What Is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial yoga — sometimes called hammock yoga or anti-gravity yoga — suspends a strong, low-stretch fabric hammock from a ceiling rig or purpose-built frame. Practitioners use this hammock as a supportive prop to move through yoga postures, inversions, and flows that would be impossible or very challenging on a mat alone.

Unlike traditional mat-based yoga, aerial yoga shifts body weight off the joints. The hammock distributes load across a wider surface area, making deep hip openers, backbends, and spinal twists more accessible — particularly for students who experience tightness or discomfort when practising on the floor. Inversions that require significant upper-body strength on the mat can be safely explored from the first session, because the hammock absorbs the structural work.

The fabric hammock itself is typically made from high-tenacity nylon or polyester tricot rated to hold several hundred kilograms.   • No severe spinal conditions, recent surgeries, or unstable joints — always consult a physician if in doubt
  • Cardiovascular conditions, glaucoma, and pregnancy are common contraindications to full inversions — modifications exist
  • A willingness to be upside down, though you build up to this gradually across the training

Equipment Safety Principles

  • Hammock fabric must be inspected before every class — look for fraying, discolouration, or worn seams
  • Carabiners and swivel hardware must be rated and load-tested; never use decorative or unrated hardware
  • Ceiling attachments require structural engineering sign-off — load forces in dynamic movement exceed static bodyweight
  • Adequate ceiling height is required for safe inversions; the minimum varies by practice style
  • Spacing between hammock points matters — students must not be able to make contact with one another mid-practice
