Yoga Teacher Salary 2026: Real Pay in India and Abroad (Sourced and Dated)

Yoga instructors in India average about ₹21,450 a month. Teachers abroad average about $35 an hour in the US, £29 in the UK and A$49 in Australia. Every figure in this guide is sourced and dated, and it also shows how RYT 200, experience and specialties change what you earn.

Quick answer: how much does a yoga teacher earn in 2026?

In India, a salaried yoga instructor earns about ₹21,450 a month on average, with most pay between ₹13,800 and ₹33,300 (Indeed India, February 2026). Abroad, most teachers are paid by the hour: about $35 an hour in the US, £29 in the UK and A$49 in Australia (Indeed, September to October 2026). Your income depends far more on how many classes you teach, and to whom, than on your certificate.

"How much will I earn?" is one of the first questions people ask before they sign up for teacher training. It is a fair question. Training costs money and time, and you want to know if teaching can pay your rent.

The internet is full of big, round salary numbers for yoga teachers. Many of them have no source. So in this 2026 update we threw out every number we could not trace. What is left comes from named salary sites and government data, with dates.

The honest picture is this: yoga teaching is mostly hourly, part-time work at first. Good teachers build a full income by stacking several kinds of work. This guide shows you the real numbers, and the real paths.

How much does a yoga teacher earn in India?

A salaried yoga instructor in India earns about ₹21,450 a month on average, according to salaries reported to Indeed India (updated February 2026). Most reported pay sits between ₹13,810 and ₹33,316 a month. Big cities pay more than small ones.

CityAverage monthly pay
Mumbai₹31,087
Delhi₹29,397
Hyderabad₹27,632
Rishikesh₹25,385
Bengaluru₹24,231
India average₹21,450

Source: Indeed India, yoga instructor salaries, updated 8 February 2026. The national average is based on 22 reported salaries, so treat it as a rough guide.

A few things to know about these numbers:

  • They are mostly salaried jobs. Think gyms, studios, schools, resorts and wellness centres.
  • They leave out private clients. Many Indian teachers earn a large part of their income from home sessions and private online clients. That money does not show up in salary surveys.
  • The sample is small. Only a few dozen salaries sit behind these averages. One new job ad can move a city's number.

Rishikesh is an interesting case. It is a small town, but its average sits above Bengaluru's. Tapovan, where our school is, is full of yoga schools and retreat centres, and they all need teachers. Still, with so few salaries reported, do not read too much into one city's figure.

How much do yoga teachers earn abroad?

Outside India, most yoga teachers are paid per class or per hour, not a monthly salary. Indeed's 2026 data puts the average at about $35 an hour in the US, £29 in the UK and A$49 in Australia. Studio rates are usually for a single class, so the hourly figure does not include your travel or planning time.

CountryAverage paySample and date
United States$34.86 an hour (range $19.81 to $61.31)3,600 salaries from job ads, Indeed, Oct 2026
United States (all fitness instructors)$47,160 a year median ($22.67 an hour)US Bureau of Labor Statistics via O*NET, 2025
United Kingdom£28.63 an hour213 salaries, Indeed UK, Oct 2026
AustraliaA$49.15 an hour33 salaries, Indeed Australia, Sep 2026
UAEAED 4,134 a monthOnly 8 salaries, Indeed UAE, Jul 2026

The US government does not track yoga teachers on their own. It groups them with all "exercise trainers and group fitness instructors". For that group, the 2025 median was $47,160 a year. The bottom 10% earned about $28,800 and the top 10% about $83,100.

The UK government's National Careers Service lists yoga teacher pay simply as "variable". It lists 24 to 37 hours a week and says you could work freelance, managing your own hours. That one word, "variable", is the most honest summary of this job.

What about Europe? We looked at Germany, but Indeed had only a handful of salaries there. That is too few to quote, so we left Europe out rather than guess.

What does an hourly rate actually add up to?

An hourly rate only becomes an income when you multiply it by the classes you can fill. Here is a simple example: 15 one-hour classes a week, which is a busy but realistic load for a part-time or newer teacher.

CountryAverage hourly rate15 classes a week (about 65 a month)
United States$34.86about $2,270 a month
United Kingdom£28.63about £1,860 a month
AustraliaA$49.15about A$3,190 a month

Our own illustration, before tax. It ignores unpaid time for travel, planning and marketing.

This is why most full-time teachers do more than group classes. Fifteen classes a week is tiring. To earn more, you either raise your rate (private and specialist work) or you sell to more people at once (workshops, retreats and online).

What is the salary for an RYT 200 teacher?

There is no separate "RYT 200 salary". RYT 200 is a Yoga Alliance registration, not a pay grade. In practice, it is the minimum most studios abroad ask for. So the averages above are, for the most part, what RYT 200 teachers earn.

Think of RYT 200 as your entry ticket. It gets you in the door. Your pay then depends on your teaching skill, your reliability and the students you bring with you. If you want the full breakdown of what RYT 200 means and how to register, read our guide: What is RYT 200?

Most new teachers start with a 200-hour yoga teacher training. It is the standard first step in almost every country.

Hands-on skill is what students pay for. In training, you practise safe, confident assists like this one, again and again.

Does a 300-hour or 500-hour certificate increase your pay?

Honestly, no reliable salary survey measures the exact pay gap between RYT 200 and RYT 500 teachers. Be careful with any article that gives you a precise percentage. What a higher certificate does is open doors to better-paid work. It does not raise your hourly rate on its own.

Here is what advanced training realistically unlocks:

  • Harder classes and longer workshops. Deeper study of anatomy, alignment and sequencing lets you teach advanced and therapeutic-style classes.
  • Teaching on teacher trainings. Yoga Alliance asks Lead Trainers to hold an E-RYT credential, and its 2025 standards ask for E-RYT 500 on 200-hour programmes. E-RYT 500 needs 500 training hours, then 2,000 hours of teaching over at least four years.
  • Trust from studio owners. A 500-hour background often helps when you apply for senior or mentoring roles.

If you already hold a 200-hour certificate, our 300-hour advanced teacher training brings you to 500 hours in total. If you are starting from zero and know you want depth, the 500-hour programme runs the 200 and 300 back to back, with no prior training needed. Our 300-hour guide explains who it suits.

How does experience change what you earn?

In the data we found, experience shows a clearer pay jump than certificates do. Payscale's US data shows it well. Entry-level yoga instructors (under one year) average about $20.38 an hour. Early-career instructors (one to four years) average about $26.58. Mid-career instructors earn about 13% above the overall average of $28.30.

Experience (US)Average hourly pay
Entry level, under 1 year$20.38
Early career, 1 to 4 years$26.58
All instructors$28.30
Mid careerabout 13% above average

Source: Payscale, yoga instructor hourly rate, US, last updated October 2025 (107 profiles). The entry and early-career figures include tips and bonuses.

Why does experience pay? Experienced teachers tend to keep their students. A teacher whose class is full every week has more room to ask for a better rate.

What are the realistic ways to earn as a yoga teacher?

Most teachers who earn a full income combine two to four of the paths below. Start with one or two, then add more as your confidence and student list grow.

Specialise to stand out

In a city with hundreds of yoga teachers, a specialty makes you easier to hire. Aerial yoga needs hammocks, rigging and special training, so fewer teachers can offer it. Our 50-hour aerial yoga teacher training is a 7-day course that starts every Monday, so you can add it straight after a 200-hour course. Sound healing is another popular add-on; our sound healing certification guide explains the levels.

Teach online from day one

Online teaching lets you reach students in other countries and time zones. If you cannot travel, our online 200-hour teacher training is a semi-private batch of up to 4 students, taught live on Zoom over 5 weeks.

How fast can you earn back the cost of training?

Training in India is affordable compared with most Western countries, so the payback can be quick. At our school, the 200-hour training costs $440 in a dorm, including the course, certificate, accommodation, two sattvic meals a day, materials and taxes. Indian residents can pay in rupees by UPI, bank transfer or card; just ask us for the INR rate.

Here is a simple way to think about it. At the US average of $34.86 an hour, $440 equals about 13 hours of paid teaching. That is roughly one month of three classes a week.

Our own illustration, before tax. Add flights, visa and Yoga Alliance fees ($50 to apply plus $65 a year) if they apply to you.

You can see every date and room price on our 200-hour course page. You reserve a seat with a 10% deposit and pay the rest on arrival. For a full cost breakdown across schools, see our Rishikesh teacher training price index.

A realistic first-year plan for new teachers

  1. Teach for free, briefly. Run 4 to 6 free classes for friends in your first month. You need practice and feedback, not money, at this stage.
  2. Get two regular paid slots. Apply to local studios, gyms, offices and schools. Two steady weekly classes beat ten one-off covers.
  3. Collect contacts. Keep a simple list of every student who wants more. These people become your private clients and workshop students.
  4. Add one private client. With a private client, you set the rate yourself.
  5. Add one specialty. Aerial, prenatal, sound or therapeutic yoga makes you easier to hire.
  6. Treat it like a business. Track your hours, your income and your costs. Our guide on starting a yoga business after certification covers the basics.

Do you need Indian certification to teach in India?

Not always, but it can help. Private studios and international schools usually accept Yoga Alliance registration. Some government and institutional jobs may ask for certification from India's Yoga Certification Board (YCB), set up under the Ministry of AYUSH. It runs levels such as Yoga Protocol Instructor, Yoga Wellness Instructor, and Yoga Teacher and Evaluator. Our school is a Yoga Alliance registered school and is also certified by AYUSH / the Yoga Certification Board. Read more in our yoga teacher certification in India guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average yoga teacher salary in India per month?

About ₹21,450 a month, based on 22 salaries reported to Indeed India (updated February 2026). Most reported pay falls between ₹13,810 and ₹33,316. Mumbai (₹31,087) and Delhi (₹29,397) pay the most among the listed cities. Private clients can add income on top of a salary.

How much does an RYT 200 yoga teacher earn?

RYT 200 is a Yoga Alliance registration, not a pay level, so there is no separate RYT 200 salary. It is the usual minimum for studio jobs abroad. That means the general averages, such as about $35 an hour in the US and £29 in the UK (Indeed, 2026), are a fair guide.

Do yoga teachers earn more abroad than in India?

Yes, in raw numbers. Hourly rates in the US, UK and Australia are much higher than Indian rates. But living costs are higher too, and work is mostly hourly and part-time. Many teachers abroad combine several studios with private and online clients to build a full income.

Does a 500-hour certificate mean higher pay?

Not automatically. No reliable survey isolates the pay gap. A 500-hour background mainly opens doors: advanced classes, longer workshops and, after years of teaching, the E-RYT 500 credential that Yoga Alliance asks of Lead Trainers on teacher trainings.

Can I teach yoga full-time right after a 200-hour course?

Some graduates do, but most start part-time. A realistic first year is a few regular weekly classes, one or two private clients and a growing student list. Full-time income usually comes from stacking several kinds of work over your first few years.

Is yoga teaching a good career?

It can be a good, meaningful career if you treat it like a small business. Expect variable income at first. Teachers who stay consistent, specialise and build loyal students tend to earn more over time, as Payscale's experience data shows.
