What Makes the Best 100-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh?

A shorter course should never mean a lower standard. Here is what sets our 100-hour foundation training apart — and what to look for in any reputable school before you book.

Taught at a Yoga Alliance Registered School

Yoga Alliance does not register 100-hour courses as a standalone RYT credential — no school can honestly promise you “RYT-100” status. What matters is that your hours are taught at a Registered Yoga School (RYS) to the same standard as a 200-hour syllabus, so they carry weight when you continue. We are an RYS, and we are straightforward about exactly what your certificate is and is not.

Experienced, Certified Lead Trainers

Beginners need the most experienced teachers, not the least. Our foundation course is led by Mayuri Shewale, an E-RYT 500 who has guided hundreds of students through teacher training, supported by faculty specialising in philosophy, anatomy and meditation. You learn the fundamentals from the same team who teach our 200-hour programme.

Small Batches & Genuine Beginner Support

If you have never held a headstand or read a word of Sanskrit, you should not be lost at the back of a crowded hall. We cap batches at around 15 students so every trainee gets hands-on alignment feedback. No prior experience is required — only a willingness to begin.

Hours That Count Toward Your RYT-200

The best foundation course is one you can build on. Our 100 hours map directly onto the first half of our 200-hour syllabus, so when you return to complete the remaining hours with us, nothing is repeated and nothing is wasted. You progress toward a full RYT-200 rather than starting over.

In short: the best 100-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh is taught at a Yoga Alliance registered school, by experienced certified trainers, in small supervised batches, with hours that carry forward to your RYT-200 — the four standards we hold ourselves to on every course.

A Deep Dive Into Each Subject Area

Your 100 hours are divided across five core subject areas — the same foundations a 200-hour syllabus opens with. Here is what you will actually explore in each.

Asana Practice & Alignment

You will learn roughly 25 classical Hatha postures alongside the Ashtanga Vinyasa sun salutations (A and B) and the standing primary series. Rather than rushing to advanced shapes, the emphasis is on getting the foundations genuinely right: how to stack a joint safely, where the breath belongs in each movement, how to use props for your particular body, and how to exit a pose as carefully as you entered it. Every posture is taught with its counter pose, its precautions, and the reasoning behind the alignment — so you leave understanding why, not just copying what you saw.

Pranayama — The Science of Breath

Breathwork is where most beginners feel the fastest change. You will start with the mechanics — the science of sitting, abdominal breathing, thoracic breathing, and full yogic breath — before moving to the classical techniques: Nadi Shodhana (alternate-nostril), Ujjayi, Bhastrika, Sitali, Sitkari and Bhramari. Each is taught with its effect on the nervous system and its contraindications, so you understand when a technique is appropriate and when it is not.

Meditation & Concentration

Meditation is built into the daily rhythm rather than bolted on. You will be introduced to trataka (candle gazing), mantra meditation, and short breath-anchored practices, beginning with sessions of just two to five minutes so the habit is sustainable rather than intimidating. You will also learn the practical side most beginners never get taught: which sitting postures work for stiff hips, and what to do when the mind simply will not settle.

Yoga Anatomy & Physiology

No medical background is needed. This module gives you a working picture of the respiratory and digestive systems, how yoga practice measurably affects each, and how postures stimulate the internal organs. You will also be introduced to the chakra model and where these energy centres sit in relation to the physical body — the traditional framework alongside the physiological one, so you can speak about both accurately.

Shatkarma — The Cleansing Practices

Shatkarma is the part of traditional Hatha Yoga most modern studios skip entirely, and it is one of the things students consistently say they valued most about training in Rishikesh. You will study and, where appropriate, practise jal neti and rubber neti (nasal cleansing), vaman dhauti, nauli, kapalbhati and trataka — with a kriya kit included in your fee. These practices are taught in their proper context, with clear guidance on who should and should not attempt each one.

Who This Course Is For

The 100-hour format suits some people far better than a full month away. Here are the profiles we most often welcome.

Complete Beginners

If you have practised casually — or barely at all — and want to know whether yoga is something you wish to go deeper into, this is the honest, low-risk way to find out. No prior experience is required. You will not be the only person here learning Surya Namaskar properly for the first time.

People Who Cannot Take a Month Off

A 200-hour training means 24 days away from work and family, which is simply not possible for many. Fourteen days fits inside most annual leave allowances. You get a genuine residential immersion without having to restructure your life to attend.

Testing the Water Before an RYT-200

Committing to a full teacher training — and its cost — is a big decision to make blind. Many students use these 100 hours to confirm the school, the teachers, and the lifestyle suit them before enrolling in the 200-hour course. Your hours carry forward, so this is a first step rather than a detour.

Practitioners Wanting Structure, Not a Certificate

Not everyone joins in order to teach. Some students have practised for years from videos and drop-in classes and simply want their foundations corrected by someone qualified — alignment, breath, and the philosophy behind it all — in a focused fortnight.

Travellers & Those Seeking a Reset

Rishikesh draws people at transitional moments — between jobs, between chapters. Two weeks of early mornings, sattvic food, and daily practice beside the Ganga is a structured reset rather than an unstructured holiday, and students frequently describe it as the most grounding fortnight they have had in years.

Wellness Professionals Adding Yoga

Personal trainers, physiotherapists, massage therapists and counsellors often want yoga's tools without a full teaching credential. The anatomy, breathwork and meditation content integrates directly into existing practice, and the short format fits a working schedule.

Prerequisites: none. You do not need to touch your toes, hold a headstand, or know any Sanskrit. Reasonable general health and a willingness to be a beginner are the only real requirements.

What to Expect from Residential Training

An honest picture of what a fortnight living at the school actually looks like — including the parts that are hard.

1

Living In Accelerates Everything

Two weeks of living, eating, and practising alongside your fellow trainees teaches you more than months of weekly classes. Learning continues at brunch, during evening practice, and in the conversations between sessions. It is the single biggest reason a short residential course can cover so much ground.

2

Early Mornings Are Non-Negotiable

The day starts at 05:30. For most students this is the hardest adjustment of the first three days and the thing they miss most once home. Practising at sunrise in the Himalayan foothills is not a marketing line — it genuinely changes the quality of the practice, and the daily rhythm is what many graduates say they took home with them.

3

Sattvic Meals & Simple Living

Meals are fresh, vegetarian, and prepared on Ayurvedic principles — designed to sustain energy through practice rather than to stimulate. Eating communally slows mealtimes and is part of the training. There is no alcohol and no meat on campus; most students find they stop missing both within a week.

4

Rishikesh as a Living Classroom

Our campus sits in Tapovan, a short walk from the Ganga where it leaves the Himalayas. Free time means river walks, ashram visits, and evening aarti at the ghats. Studying yoga in the place the tradition was formalised gives the classroom material a context no city studio can offer.

5

Honest Challenges — and How to Prepare

Physical fatigue in the first few days is normal as your body adapts to practising twice daily. Some students experience mild digestive adjustment in the first week. Fourteen days is short, so the pace is brisk. Arriving with even a light regular practice, and the willingness to be a beginner in front of others, will set you up well.

Your Path from 100 Hours to RYT-200

Being clear about what a 100-hour certificate is — and what it is not — saves a lot of disappointment later. Here is exactly how it works.

What You Receive

On completing the course you receive a 100-hour foundation certificate from Swaastik Yog School, a Yoga Alliance Registered School. It records your contact hours broken down by subject area and confirms the training was delivered to RYS standards.

Be cautious of any school advertising an “RYT-100” qualification — no such registration exists. Yoga Alliance's entry-level teaching credential is the RYT-200. We would rather tell you that plainly than sell you a certificate that does not do what you expected.

How Your Hours Carry Forward

Our 100-hour syllabus is the first half of our 200-hour syllabus. Return to complete the remaining hours with us and you continue from where you finished rather than repeating material you have already covered.

Once the full 200 hours are complete, you receive your RYT-200 certificate and can register directly with Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga Teacher — qualifying you to teach professionally in 70+ countries.

Step 1: Complete 100 Hours

Fourteen days of residential training covering asana, pranayama, meditation, anatomy and shatkarma.

Step 2: Receive Your Certificate

A foundation certificate from a Yoga Alliance Registered School, with your hours itemised by subject.

Step 3: Top Up to RYT-200

Return for the remaining hours, earn your RYT-200, and register with Yoga Alliance to teach worldwide.
