Yoga Teacher Training in India: A Complete Guide for UK Students

Visa, flights, money, time zones, and packing — everything UK students need to know before booking yoga teacher training in Rishikesh.

If you are based in the United Kingdom and considering yoga teacher training in India, Rishikesh is almost certainly the destination at the top of your list — and for good reason. The Yoga Capital of the World offers the deepest, most authentic training available anywhere, at a fraction of UK prices. This guide is written specifically for UK students: visa, flights, money, timing, and what your friends and family back home need to know.

Why UK Students Choose India for YTT

UK-based yoga schools typically charge between £2,500 and £4,500 for a 200-hour residential YTT. By contrast, an all-inclusive 200-hour course at Swaastik Yog School in Rishikesh runs from $400 (roughly £320) for the dorm option, including accommodation, three sattvic vegetarian meals daily, study materials, and certification. Even with flights factored in, the total cost is far lower than studying at home — and the depth of teaching, with native Indian gurus rooted in classical lineages, is something UK-based programs cannot match.

Indian Visa Requirements for UK Citizens (2026)

UK passport holders can apply for an Indian e-Tourist Visa entirely online before traveling. Here is what you need to know.

  • Apply at: indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa (the official government portal — beware of third-party sites charging inflated fees).
  • Validity options: 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years. For a 200-hour YTT (24 days), the 30-day visa is sufficient. For longer stays or future trips, the 1-year multiple-entry option is excellent value.
  • Cost: Approximately £25 for the 30-day, £30 for 1-year, £65 for 5-year (subject to change — confirm at the time of applying).
  • Processing time: Typically 3 to 5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before departure to allow buffer.
  • What you need: A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date with two blank pages, a digital passport-style photo (white background), and a photo of your passport bio page.

The e-visa is electronically linked to your passport. You will receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email — print it and bring it to the airport.

Flights from the UK to Rishikesh

The closest international airport to Rishikesh is in Delhi (DEL — Indira Gandhi International). From Delhi, Rishikesh is roughly 240 km north via road or a short domestic flight to Dehradun (DED).

Direct Flights from the UK

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Delhi take approximately 8 to 9 hours. Operating airlines include British Airways, Air India, and Virgin Atlantic. Expect to pay £450 to £750 return outside peak season, rising to £900+ in December and around school holidays.

From Delhi to Rishikesh

  • Domestic flight to Dehradun (DED): 50 minutes, around £40 to £80 one-way. From Dehradun, a 1-hour pre-arranged taxi takes you to Rishikesh. This is the fastest option.
  • Pre-arranged taxi from Delhi airport: 5 to 6 hours, around £45 to £70. We arrange this for our students if booked in advance — your driver waits at arrivals with a name board.
  • Train: The Shatabdi Express runs from New Delhi to Haridwar (4 hours, £8 to £15), then a 30-minute taxi to Rishikesh. Cheapest option but adds complexity.

Tip: Most UK students arrive at Delhi exhausted. We strongly recommend the pre-arranged taxi or domestic flight rather than navigating Indian trains on day one.

Money: GBP, INR, and What to Budget

The Indian Rupee (INR) currently trades at roughly £1 = ₹105 (subject to fluctuation). Outside your course fees and flights, here is a realistic spending guide for UK students.

  • Daily personal spending: £8 to £15 for snacks, cafés, occasional auto-rickshaw rides, laundry, and small shopping.
  • Tips and gratuities: Budget around £25 to £40 for course-end tips for teachers and staff if you wish (entirely optional but appreciated).
  • Excursions and treatments: An Ayurvedic massage runs £15 to £25. A guided Himalayan day trip £20 to £35. Most of our students do 2 or 3 of these during the course.
  • Souvenirs and yoga gear: Rishikesh has excellent and affordable yoga clothing, malas, singing bowls, and books. £50 to £150 covers a meaningful haul.

How to access cash: ATMs are widely available in Tapovan and Laxman Jhula. Most accept UK debit cards (Visa and Mastercard). Inform your bank of travel before departure to avoid blocked transactions. Notify your bank that you'll be in India for the relevant dates.

Time Zones and Family Calls

India Standard Time (IST) is 4.5 hours ahead of GMT in summer (5.5 ahead of BST) and 5.5 hours ahead of GMT in winter. Practical implications for staying in touch with family back home:

  • Morning practice sessions in Rishikesh (6 to 8 AM IST) overlap with the UK's middle-of-the-night, so don't expect to chat home before class.
  • The lunch break (typically 1 to 2 PM IST) corresponds to 7:30 to 8:30 AM UK time — perfect for a quick call to parents or partners getting ready for work.
  • Evening (after 8 PM IST) corresponds to 2:30 to 3:30 PM UK — ideal for longer family conversations or video calls.

WhatsApp and FaceTime work over Wi-Fi, which is provided at Swaastik Yog School. UK SIM cards rarely roam well in India; we recommend an Airtel or Jio Indian SIM (£3 to £5 for 28 days with generous data) if you need reliable mobile connectivity.

Best Time of Year for UK Students

The UK weather influences when many British students travel for YTT. Here is the seasonal breakdown for Rishikesh.

  • October to mid-November: Peak season. Comfortable 22 to 28°C days, cool evenings. Coincides with the start of UK winter — a wonderful escape from grey London skies.
  • February to April: Spring in Rishikesh. Pleasant 18 to 28°C, blossoms across the hillsides. Avoid the second half of March if you dislike intense Holi color celebrations.
  • December to January: Cold mornings (5 to 12°C) and warm afternoons. Bring a fleece and wooly hat for early meditation. Quieter, more intimate atmosphere — appealing if you want to escape UK Christmas commercialism.
  • May to June: Hot (30 to 38°C) but discounted rates. Suits heat-tolerant practitioners.
  • July to September: Monsoon. Most schools pause. Not recommended.

What to Pack from the UK

Your packing list as a UK student differs slightly from someone arriving from a tropical country. Bring:

  • Warm layers for early mornings: A fleece, lightweight down jacket, and warm socks for October to March arrivals. Mornings are cold even in shoulder season.
  • Loose, modest clothing: Rishikesh is a holy town. Cover shoulders and knees outside of yoga sessions.
  • Yoga gear: Two or three sets of leggings or yoga pants and supportive tops. A travel yoga mat is optional — we provide quality mats.
  • Toiletries: Bring your preferred brands. Indian pharmacies are well-stocked but UK favorites are easier to bring than search for.
  • UK-to-India travel adaptor: India uses Type C, D, and M plugs. A universal adaptor solves it.
  • Notebook and pen: Old-fashioned but essential for philosophy lectures.
  • Travel insurance documents: Don't skip this. Get comprehensive cover including medical evacuation. Companies like Staysure and World Nomads offer good UK-targeted plans.

Health and Vaccinations

The NHS Travel Health Pro website maintains current advice for UK travelers to India. As of 2026, recommendations typically include hepatitis A, typhoid, and a tetanus booster. Some travelers also choose hepatitis B, rabies, and Japanese encephalitis depending on planned activities. Visit your GP at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure to allow time for vaccines.

Bring a basic medical kit: paracetamol, ibuprofen, rehydration sachets, antihistamines, plasters, and a course of antibiotics for travelers' diarrhea (your GP can prescribe). Ayurvedic remedies are widely available in Rishikesh too and worth exploring.

Cultural Notes for UK Students

  • Rishikesh is a holy city. Alcohol is not sold within the city. Meat and eggs are also not served at most local establishments. If you are accustomed to a pint after work, pre-prepare for a four-week pause.
  • Dress modestly outside class. Especially as a woman, cover shoulders and knees when walking through town or visiting temples.
  • Public displays of affection are uncommon. Holding hands is fine; kissing in public is not.
  • Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. 10% at restaurants is generous; small notes for porters or auto drivers are kind.
  • British humor doesn't always translate. Sarcasm, in particular, is rarely the right register. Direct, warm communication works best.

Returning to the UK as a Certified Yoga Teacher

After completing your 200-hour TTC, you will receive a certificate registered with Yoga Alliance, the international standard recognized in the UK. Once you complete the training, you can register as an RYT-200 with Yoga Alliance for $50, and also with the British Wheel of Yoga or the Independent Yoga Network if you wish to teach within UK studios.

UK yoga teaching pays £30 to £80 per class for studio work. Many of our UK alumni teach part-time alongside their main career, run weekend retreats in the Cotswolds or Cornwall, or teach corporate yoga sessions which are especially well-paid in London.

Ready to Begin?

If you are seriously considering yoga teacher training and you are based in the UK, the next step is straightforward. Pick the course that fits your goals and timeline — explore our 200-hour TTC for the standard certification, the 100-hour course for a shorter immersion, or the 300-hour TTC if you are already RYT-200. Compare options on the course comparison page and reach out via WhatsApp if you have questions a UK student would naturally ask.

Thousands of British students have walked this path before you and returned home transformed. The Ganges is waiting.
