UK passport holders can apply for an Indian e-Tourist Visa entirely online before traveling. Here is what you need to know.

• Apply at: indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa (the official government portal — beware of third-party sites charging inflated fees).
• Validity options: 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years. For a 200-hour YTT (24 days), the 30-day visa is sufficient. For longer stays or future trips, the 1-year multiple-entry option is excellent value.
• Cost: Approximately £25 for the 30-day, £30 for 1-year, £65 for 5-year (subject to change — confirm at the time of applying).
• Processing time: Typically 3 to 5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before departure to allow buffer.
• What you need: A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date with two blank pages, a digital passport-style photo (white background), and a photo of your passport bio page.

The e-visa is electronically linked to your passport. You will receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email — print it and bring it to the airport.

Flights from the UK to Rishikesh

The closest international airport to Rishikesh is in Delhi (DEL — Indira Gandhi International). From Delhi, Rishikesh is roughly 240 km north via road or a short domestic flight to Dehradun (DED).

Direct Flights from the UK

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Delhi take approximately 8 to 9 hours. Operating airlines include British Airways, Air India, and Virgin Atlantic. Expect to pay £450 to £750 return outside peak season, rising to £900+ in December and around school holidays.

From Delhi to Rishikesh

• Domestic flight to Dehradun (DED): 50 minutes, around £40 to £80 one-way. From Dehradun, a 1-hour pre-arranged taxi takes you to Rishikesh. This is the fastest option.
• Pre-arranged taxi from Delhi airport: 5 to 6 hours, around £45 to £70. We arrange this for our students if booked in advance — your driver waits at arrivals with a name board.
• Train: The Shatabdi Express runs from New Delhi to Haridwar (4 hours, £8 to £15), then a 30-minute taxi to Rishikesh. Cheapest option but adds complexity.

Tip: Most UK students arrive at Delhi exhausted. We strongly recommend the pre-arranged taxi or domestic flight rather than navigating Indian trains on day one.

Money: GBP, INR, and What to Budget

The Indian Rupee (INR) currently trades at roughly £1 = ₹105 (subject to fluctuation). Outside your course fees and flights, here is a realistic spending guide for UK students.

• Daily personal spending: £8 to £15 for snacks, cafés, occasional auto-rickshaw rides, laundry, and small shopping.
• Tips and gratuities: Budget around £25 to £40 for course-end tips for teachers and staff if you wish (entirely optional but appreciated).
• Excursions and treatments: An Ayurvedic massage runs £15 to £25. A guided Himalayan day trip £20 to £35. Most of our students do 2 or 3 of these during the course.
• Souvenirs and yoga gear: Rishikesh has excellent and affordable yoga clothing, malas, singing bowls, and books. £50 to £150 covers a meaningful haul.

How to access cash: ATMs are widely available in Tapovan and Laxman Jhula. Most accept UK debit cards (Visa and Mastercard). Inform your bank of travel before departure to avoid blocked transactions. Notify your bank that you'll be in India for the relevant dates.

Time Zones and Family Calls

India Standard Time (IST) is 4.5 hours ahead of GMT in summer (5.5 ahead of BST) and 5.5 hours ahead of GMT in winter. Practical implications for staying in touch with family back home:

Cultural Notes for UK Students

• Rishikesh is a holy city. Alcohol is not sold within the city. Meat and eggs are also not served at most local establishments. If you are accustomed to a pint after work, pre-prepare for a four-week pause.
• Dress modestly outside class. Especially as a woman, cover shoulders and knees when walking through town or visiting temples.
• Public displays of affection are uncommon. Holding hands is fine; kissing in public is not.
• Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. 10% at restaurants is generous; small notes for porters or auto drivers are kind.
• British humor doesn't always translate. Sarcasm, in particular, is rarely the right register. Direct, warm communication works best.

Returning to the UK as a Certified Yoga Teacher

After completing your 200-hour TTC, you will receive a certificate registered with Yoga Alliance, the international standard recognized in the UK. Once you complete the training, you can register as an RYT-200 with Yoga Alliance for $50, and also with the British Wheel of Yoga or the Independent Yoga Network if you wish to teach within UK studios.
