Small Group Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh (2026)

Why batch size matters in yoga teacher training, what counts as small in Rishikesh, questions to ask, and small-batch schools from $440 all-inclusive.

Quick answer: where can I do a small-group yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

In Rishikesh, a "small group" yoga teacher training usually means 20 students or fewer, and boutique schools cap batches at 8 to 15. Swaastik Yog School in Tapovan runs 15–20 students per batch. Founder Mayuri Shewale (E-RYT 500) leads every 200-hour batch. The 22-day course costs from $440 all-inclusive. If you want an even smaller group, our live online 200-hour is semi-private, with a maximum of 4 students, also at $440.

  • Ask every school for its batch cap in writing. Many schools do not publish one.
  • Batch size changes how many adjustments, teaching turns and feedback minutes you get.
  • In our own check of 19 Rishikesh schools, price did not predict group size.

Written by Mayuri Shewale, E-RYT 500 (Yoga Alliance), founder of Swaastik Yog School in Rishikesh. Prices and dates checked on 20 October 2026.

Disclosure: Swaastik Yog School wrote this guide and is one of the schools listed.

When students write to us before booking, they ask about price, dates and rooms. Few ask the question that shapes the whole month: how many people will be in the room with me?

I have taught yoga teacher training in Rishikesh for many years, and I can tell you that group size changes everything. It decides how often a teacher touches your posture, how many times you stand up and teach, and whether your questions get answered or lost.

This guide explains why batch size matters, what "small" really means in Rishikesh, the questions to ask any school, and where we fit. I will also name two other small-batch schools I checked, fairly, so you can compare.

Why does batch size matter in a yoga teacher training?

Batch size matters because a 200-hour training has a fixed number of teacher hours, and every extra student shares them. The schedule does not grow when the group grows. A 90-minute alignment class is 90 minutes whether there are 12 people or 40.

Here is where you feel it most.

1. Hands-on adjustments

Adjustments are the fastest way to understand a posture in your own body. A teacher moving through a room of 12 can reach every mat more than once in a class. In a room of 35, many students get one quick touch, or none, in the poses that matter most to them.

2. Teaching practicum time

Practice teaching is the part of a teacher training most students say they wanted more of. Yoga Alliance's 200-hour standards include a practicum, where you teach and get feedback. Your turns at the front of the room add up quickly or slowly depending on group size.

A simple example: if a school gives the whole group 10 hours of practicum and each student teaches a 20-minute slot with feedback, a group of 15 gives everyone about two full turns. A group of 40 gives most people less than one. Schools split large groups into smaller teaching pods to help, but someone still has to watch each pod and give feedback.

3. Feedback and questions

Feedback is personal, and it takes time. In a small batch, the teacher knows your shoulders, your old knee injury and the cue you keep forgetting. In a large batch, feedback often becomes general advice to the whole room.

Questions work the same way. In a group of 15, there is room to ask "why?" in a philosophy class and get a real answer. In a group of 40, the shy students stop asking.

4. The group itself

A smaller group is also a closer group. You eat together, practise together and teach each other for three weeks. In a group of 15, you know everyone by the end of the first week, and that trust makes it easier to stand up and teach.

What counts as a "small group" yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

In Rishikesh, a batch of 20 or fewer is generally marketed as small, and 8 to 15 is the boutique range. There is no official definition. Yoga Alliance does not set a maximum batch size for a 200-hour training, so each school decides.

When we built our 2026 price index of 19 Rishikesh schools, fewer than half published a batch size at all. The published numbers ranged from 8 to 20, and "up to 15" was the most common claim. Course listings on booking sites for Rishikesh trainings show caps up to about 25. Larger schools and ashram-style programmes may not publish a cap, so a group can be bigger than that. If a school gives no number, ask.

Use these tiers as a rough guide.

Batch size tierTypical sizeWhat you usually getWatch out for
Private / semi-private1–4 studentsFeedback on almost every class. You teach often. Fully shaped around you.Few peers to practise teaching on. Mostly found online or at a higher price in person.

Small15–20 studentsRegular hands-on help, enough peers for varied teaching practice, steady feedback.Ask whether the cap is firm or "usually".

Is a smaller group always better for yoga teacher training?

A smaller group is not always better; there is a sweet spot. Below about 8 people, you have fewer bodies to practise teaching on, fewer different questions in the room and less of the shared energy that carries you through a hard week.

Teaching a class of three is not the same as teaching a class of fifteen. After you graduate, you will teach mixed groups of strangers. Practising on a varied group of peers is good preparation for that.

Very small in-person groups can also cost more, because the school's fixed costs are shared by fewer people. And if a school needs a minimum number to run a batch, ask what happens if it is not met.

For most first-time trainees, a batch of roughly 10 to 20, with experienced teachers present in every asana class, gives a good balance. Our beginner's guide to yoga teacher training explains what else to look for if this is your first course.

What questions should I ask a school about class size?

The single most useful question is: "What is the maximum number of students in my batch, and is that cap guaranteed?" Ask it by email or WhatsApp, so you have the answer in writing.

Then ask these:

  1. How many students are in the batch I want to join right now? A cap of 20 means little if the batch is already full or if two batches are merged.
  2. How many teachers are in the room during asana classes? One teacher with 15 students is very different from two teachers with 15.
  3. Who teaches the main classes? Ask for names. Check if the founder or lead teacher you read about teaches your batch, or only appears in photos.
  4. Do different courses share classes? Some schools put 100-hour, 200-hour and 300-hour students in the same hall for some sessions. That can be fine, but you should know.
  5. How is practice teaching organised? Ask how many times you will teach, for how long, and who gives feedback.
  6. Do drop-in or retreat guests join TTC classes? Extra people in the room change the group size you were promised.
  7. Can I see a photo of a recent batch? A graduation photo shows the real group size quickly.

Also read reviews for comments about group size and personal attention. Reviews that say "the teacher knew all of us by name" tell you something a marketing page cannot.

Group size is one item on a longer checklist. Our guide to the best yoga schools in Rishikesh covers teachers, certification and location too.

Which Rishikesh schools run small-batch yoga teacher trainings?

Several Rishikesh schools publish a batch cap of 15 or fewer. Here are two I checked on their own websites on 20 October 2026, next to ours. Prices for other schools are approximate; please confirm with the school.

These schools all take group size seriously, and any of them may suit you. The right one depends on your budget, the teachers you connect with and the style you want to learn. Ask each one the questions above before you pay a deposit.

How does Swaastik Yog School keep its batches small?

Swaastik Yog School keeps every in-person batch to 15–20 students, and I lead every batch myself, with my co-founder Rahul Badoni teaching philosophy. We have run the school in Rishikesh since 2015, and this size is a deliberate choice, not a slow season.

Here is what that looks like in practice on our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh:

  • The founders teach you. I personally lead every 200-, 300- and 500-hour batch, and I teach the asana, alignment and teaching-methodology work. My co-founder, Rahul Badoni (E-RYT 500, 15+ years), teaches yoga philosophy. You will not meet us only on the welcome day.
  • Everyone teaches, often. With 15–20 people, everyone gets real practicum turns with feedback, plus enough classmates to practise on different bodies.
  • Adjustments reach every mat. In a group this size, the teacher can see and help every student in each class.
  • Fixed start dates. Batches start on the 5th and 15th of every month, and the 200-hour course runs for 22 days.

Our campus is a new garden campus in Tapovan, a short walk from the Ganga. The 200-hour course is all-inclusive: training, accommodation, sattvic vegetarian meals, course materials and your Yoga Alliance certificate.

Private room, attached bath$1,100

We are a women-led school. Dorms are gender-separate, there are female staff on campus and we have a written code of conduct. You can read more on our women-led yoga school in Rishikesh page. From November to February, our halls are heated and every room has a heated blanket.

Can I do an even smaller, semi-private yoga teacher training?

Yes. Our online 200-hour yoga teacher training is semi-private, with a maximum of 4 students per batch, for $440. It is taught live by our team, so you get the close attention of a tiny group without travelling.

With only four people, you get feedback in almost every session and you teach often. The trade-off is the one above: fewer peers to practise on, and you miss the Rishikesh experience of the Ganga, the shared meals and the hall. If that matters to you, you can still visit us later for a retreat or the 300-hour.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good batch size for yoga teacher training?

For most people, a batch of about 10 to 20 students works well. It is small enough for regular adjustments, several practice-teaching turns and personal feedback, and big enough to practise teaching on different bodies. Below about 8, you lose peer variety. Above about 25, individual attention drops unless the school adds teachers.

How many students are in a yoga teacher training batch in Rishikesh?

It depends on the school. Of the Rishikesh schools we checked that publish a number, batch caps ranged from 8 to 20, and some booking-site listings show caps up to about 25. Many schools do not publish a cap at all, so ask for the maximum in writing before you pay a deposit.

What is the batch size at Swaastik Yog School?

Our in-person 200-, 300- and 500-hour batches have 15–20 students. Founder Mayuri Shewale (E-RYT 500) leads every batch, and co-founder Rahul Badoni teaches philosophy. Our online 200-hour course is semi-private, with a maximum of 4 students. Both 200-hour options start from $440.

Does a small-group yoga teacher training cost more?

Not necessarily. In our 2026 check of 19 Rishikesh schools, price did not line up with group size. Schools at $699 and $1,000 promised similar small groups. Our 200-hour is $440 all-inclusive in a dorm with 15–20 students per batch. Compare what is included, not only the headline price.

How do I know if a school really keeps batches small?

Ask how many students are booked in your batch right now, how many teachers are in each asana class, and whether different courses share classes. Ask for a photo of a recent graduating batch. Read reviews that mention personal attention. A school with a real cap will answer clearly and in writing.
