Best Yoga School in Tapovan, Rishikesh: 2026 Local Guide

Choosing a yoga school in Tapovan? Upper vs Lower Tapovan, what to check, and 5 schools compared, led by women-led Swaastik ($440 all-inclusive 200-hour).

Quick answer: what is the best yoga school in Tapovan, Rishikesh?

For most international students we recommend Swaastik Yog School: a women-led Yoga Alliance school (RYS 200, 300 and 500) founded in 2015 by Mayuri Shewale, E-RYT 500, on a new garden campus in Tapovan. Batches are 15 to 20 students, and the 200-hour course costs $440 all-inclusive in a dorm. Other well-known Tapovan schools are Vinyasa Yogashala, Jiva Yoga Academy, Mira Yogashala and Nirvana Yoga School.

  • Upper Tapovan: the hillside above the main road. Quieter, with more views, but more climbing.
  • Lower Tapovan: the lanes down towards the Ganga and Laxman Jhula. Closer to cafes, and busier.
  • Before you pay: check the school in the Yoga Alliance directory, ask for the full price in writing, and see the room if you can.

Disclosure: Swaastik Yog School wrote this guide and is one of the schools listed.

Tapovan is small, but it has a lot of shalas, and from the outside they all look the same. This guide explains how Upper and Lower Tapovan differ, what to check before you book, and how five well-known Tapovan schools compare, ours included. For the neighbourhood itself, with its cafes, food and daily life, read our Tapovan neighbourhood guide.

Why do so many people choose Tapovan for yoga teacher training?

Tapovan is the part of Rishikesh with one of the highest numbers of yoga schools, and it is quieter than the Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula riverfronts.

You get a real yoga community, with shalas, health cafes and other students on every lane, but you can still sleep well before a sunrise class. It is also practical for a three or four-week course:

  • The Ganga is close. Most of Tapovan is a short walk from the river.
  • Laxman Jhula is walkable. From most parts of Tapovan it takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes on foot to reach the Laxman Jhula area.
  • Daily needs are nearby. Cafes, shops, pharmacies, ATMs and laundry are all within walking distance.

For your day off, see our list of things to do in Rishikesh.

Upper vs Lower Tapovan: which is better for yoga teacher training?

Lower Tapovan is the area between the main Badrinath Road and the river, while Upper Tapovan is the hillside above the road.

There is no official border, but the difference is real when you live there for three weeks.

QuestionUpper TapovanLower Tapovan
Where is it?Uphill from Badrinath Road, along lanes such as the Balaknath temple roadBetween Badrinath Road and the Ganga, along lanes towards Laxman Jhula
NoiseUsually quieter, with fewer passing touristsLivelier, with more cafes, guesthouses and foot traffic
ViewsHill and valley views from many rooftopsSome river views, but more buildings close together
WalkingSteep lanes and steps. Tiring after a long day of asanaFlatter, and closer to the river and cafes
EveningsSome lanes are darker and emptier at nightBusier and better lit in the evening
Best forStudents who want silence and do not mind climbingStudents who want cafes and the river on their doorstep

Neither is better for learning: a good teacher in a busy lane beats a weak teacher on a quiet hill. If your knees are sensitive, ask how many steps lie between your room, the shala and the dining hall. If you travel alone, ask how the walk back from the nearest cafe feels after dark.

What should you look for in a Tapovan yoga school?

The most important check is whether the school is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) in the Yoga Alliance online directory, not just whether it shows the logo.

A logo proves nothing. Search the school's name on the Yoga Alliance site and confirm its levels (here is our Yoga Alliance profile). Finishing a course gives you the school's certificate; registering as an RYT 200 is a separate step you apply and pay for yourself.

Then ask every school the same questions:

  • Who actually teaches? Get the lead teachers' names for your dates and check their Yoga Alliance profiles.
  • How many students per batch? Ask for the maximum, not the average.
  • What is included? Get it in writing: training, room, meals, books, certificate. Ask what costs extra, such as air conditioning, pickup or extra nights.
  • What is the room like? Ask for real photos of your exact room type. "Shared" can mean two people or four.
  • Is it heated in winter? Tapovan mornings are cold from November to February.
  • What is the refund policy? Read it before you pay a deposit.

Our guide to the best yoga schools in Rishikesh in 2026 has a longer list of red flags that apply to the whole town.

Which yoga schools are in Tapovan? A fair shortlist

Five well-known schools that give a Tapovan address on their own websites are Swaastik Yog School, Vinyasa Yogashala, Jiva Yoga Academy, Mira Yogashala and Nirvana Yoga School.

We list ours first because we can vouch for every fact about it. For the other four, we used only what each school publishes on its own site. Their prices are approximate, so please confirm them with the school.

Other schools' details come from their own websites, checked on 20 October 2026. Course lengths differ: our 200-hour course is 22 days, and the other four list about 24 days.

1. Swaastik Yog School: women-led, small batches, all-inclusive from $440

Swaastik Yog School is a women-led Yoga Alliance school (RYS 200, RYS 300, RYS 500, RCYS and YACEP) founded in 2015 by Mayuri Shewale, who personally leads every 200, 300 and 500-hour batch.

Mayuri and co-founder Rahul Badoni (philosophy, E-RYT 500, 15+ years) teach the trainings in English, in batches of 15 to 20. In 2026 we moved to a new garden campus in Tapovan, a short walk from the Ganga.

The 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh runs for 22 days, starting on the 5th and 15th of every month: $440 dorm, $880 twin-shared or $1,100 private, including training, room, sattvic vegetarian meals, materials and certificate. Dorms are bamboo cottages with bunk beds; shared and private rooms have attached bathrooms (see our accommodation page). From November to February the halls are heated and every room has a heated blanket.

We are also one of the very few schools in India with a dedicated aerial programme. Through our specialist brand Aerial Rishikesh, on the same campus with the same team, we run the Aerial Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh: 50 hours over 7 days, every Monday, from $195.

Strengths: the founder leads every batch, a low all-inclusive price, a women-led school with gender-separate dorms and female staff, and aerial and sound healing training on site.

Considerations: $440 is a dorm bunk bed. Some schools below run smaller groups. Pickup from Dehradun airport (DED) costs extra.

2. Vinyasa Yogashala: established Upper Tapovan school with many course options

Vinyasa Yogashala gives its address as Balaknath Street, Upper Tapovan, and offers 100, 200, 300 and 500-hour teacher trainings plus a 200-hour Kundalini course.

Strengths: a wide menu, including short aerial, yin, prenatal and sound healing courses, online trainings and a Bali course. Its site says batches are usually 14 to 18 students, and its 200-hour fee includes vegetarian and vegan meals and rooms with attached bathrooms.

Considerations: the lowest 200-hour price (approx. $649) is for a four-share room for women only. Private rooms are approx. $1,199 to $1,299 depending on the month, and air conditioning costs extra. The school itself warns that some schools use similar names, so check the web address before you pay.

3. Jiva Yoga Academy: small Hatha and Ashtanga groups

Jiva Yoga Academy gives its address as Secret Waterfall Road, Tapovan, and runs 100, 200, 300 and 500-hour teacher trainings.

Strengths: its site says groups average about 10 to 12 students. The 24-day 200-hour course teaches Hatha and the Ashtanga Primary Series, includes three meals a day, and has rooms with attached bathrooms.

Considerations: prices are in euros and sit higher than many Tapovan schools, approx. EUR 1,199 twin-sharing to EUR 1,399 private. The site does not show a dorm option.

4. Mira Yogashala: small groups in Lower Tapovan

Mira Yogashala gives its address as the Laxman Jhula footpath (Paidal Marg) in Lower Tapovan, and offers 100, 200, 300 and 500-hour trainings.

Strengths: its 200-hour page states a maximum of 12 students per batch, three vegetarian meals a day with vegan options, and a mix of Hatha, Ashtanga Vinyasa and Kundalini. The Lower Tapovan location puts you close to cafes and the river path.

Considerations: the 200-hour course is approx. $1,150 twin-shared or $1,350 private for 24 days, which is more than many Tapovan schools, and there is no dorm option listed. Lower Tapovan is livelier, so ask about noise.

5. Nirvana Yoga School: several 200-hour styles

Nirvana Yoga School lists its location as Tapovan, Rishikesh, and offers four different 200-hour tracks, plus 300 and 500-hour courses.

Strengths: a choice of 200-hour focus: Hatha Ashtanga Vinyasa, Ayurveda and Hatha, Meditation and Yoga Nidra, or Kundalini. It says it is RYS 200, 300 and 500 registered. Its FAQ says the fee covers accommodation, sattvic meals and the certificate, and dorm, twin and private rooms appear in its photos. Courses start from approx. $649.

Considerations: its website gives no street address and no batch size. Ask for a map pin and the maximum group size before you book.

A note on Rishikesh Yogkulam: it sometimes appears in lists of Tapovan schools, but its own website gives its address in Swarg Ashram (Jonk), on the other side of the river, so we have not included it here.

How do you visit and check a yoga school in Tapovan in person?

If you are already in Rishikesh, the best way to choose a school is to visit two or three of them before you pay, because the room, the hall and the people tell you more than any website.

Tapovan is compact, so you can see several schools in one morning on foot:

  1. Message first. Ask each school a day ahead when you can visit. A school happy to show you around is a good sign.
  2. Go in the morning. Between about 7 and 11 AM you will see classes running and how full the hall is.
  3. See the exact room. Ask for the room type you would book, not the best one. Check the mattress, hot water, lock and bathroom.
  4. Stand in the hall. Is there space for every mat, and props such as blocks, straps and bolsters? Heating in winter?
  5. Ask who will teach your batch. Check the names on the Yoga Alliance directory while you are there.
  6. Get the price in writing. The total, what is included, what costs extra, and the deposit and refund terms.
  7. Talk to a current student. Ask whether the real day matches the website.

If you cannot visit, ask for a live video walk-through of the room and hall. You are welcome to contact us and ask about visiting our campus, or compare all our dates and prices on our courses page.

Which Tapovan yoga school is right for you?

The right Tapovan school depends on your budget, how small you want your group to be, and whether you prefer the quiet hillside or the lanes near the river.

  • All-inclusive value, a women-led school or aerial training: Swaastik Yog School.
  • The smallest groups, with a higher budget: Mira Yogashala or Jiva Yoga Academy.
  • A particular 200-hour style, such as Kundalini or Ayurveda: compare Vinyasa Yogashala and Nirvana Yoga School.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best yoga school in Tapovan, Rishikesh?

For most international students, we recommend Swaastik Yog School: women-led, Yoga Alliance RYS 200, 300 and 500, batches of 15 to 20, and an all-inclusive 200-hour course from $440. We wrote this guide, so also compare Vinyasa Yogashala, Jiva Yoga Academy, Mira Yogashala and Nirvana Yoga School, and check each one on the Yoga Alliance directory.

Is Upper or Lower Tapovan better for yoga teacher training?

Neither is better for learning. Upper Tapovan, on the hillside above Badrinath Road, is usually quieter with more views but has steep lanes. Lower Tapovan, between the road and the Ganga, is closer to cafes and the river but busier. Choose the teacher first and use the location to decide between schools you already trust.

How much does a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Tapovan cost?

Among the five Tapovan schools in this guide, 200-hour courses start at $440 at Swaastik Yog School (dorm, all-inclusive) and go up to about $1,350 or EUR 1,399 for a private room elsewhere. Most published prices include a room and meals, but always ask for the full price and the extras in writing.

How far is Tapovan from Laxman Jhula and the Ganga?

Most of Tapovan is a short walk from the Ganga, and you can walk to the Laxman Jhula area in roughly 15 to 25 minutes, depending on where your school is. Schools in Lower Tapovan are usually closer to the river path. Schools in Upper Tapovan need a walk downhill first.

Can I visit a yoga school in Tapovan before I book?

Yes. If you are already in Rishikesh, message the school a day ahead and visit in the morning, when classes are running. See the exact room you would book, ask who will teach your batch, and get the price in writing. If you are abroad, ask for a live video walk-through.
