Best Time to Visit Rishikesh for Yoga: Month-by-Month Weather Guide

October–November and February–March are the easiest months for yoga in Rishikesh. Here is a month-by-month table of temperatures and rainfall, what December and the monsoon are really like, and festival dates for 2026–27, from a school in Tapovan that teaches all year.

Quick answer: when is the best time to visit Rishikesh for yoga?

The best months are October to November and February to March. Days are about 22–30°C (72–86°F), and there is very little rain, with roughly 0–3 rainy days a month. December and January are clear but cold at dawn, around 6–7°C (43–45°F). May and June are hot, with average highs of about 36°C (97°F). July and August are the monsoon, with about 400–450 mm of rain and 15–16 rainy days each month.

Every month in Rishikesh feels different. This guide gives you real numbers for each month, and what each one is like inside a yoga course: how cold the 6 AM class feels, when the heat gets hard, and what the rain changes.

Written by Mayuri Shewale, E-RYT 500 (Yoga Alliance) and founder of Swaastik Yog School in Rishikesh. I live in Tapovan and teach on our campus on Badrinath Road all year round, through cold winters, hot summers and the monsoon. The temperatures below are long-term averages from published climate data (Weather2Travel). Monsoon dates come from the India Meteorological Department's Dehradun office. Festival dates come from the official event site or from Hindu calendars. Any single year can be warmer, colder or wetter than these averages. Last checked: 14 October 2026.

What is the best month to visit Rishikesh?

For most yoga students, October, November, February and March are the best months to visit Rishikesh. These months are dry and sunny. Days are warm and nights are cool, so you sleep well and can practise outside. If you can only pick one month, pick October or November: the monsoon has just ended, the hills are still green, and the rain is almost gone.

That said, "best" depends on you. If you love quiet and do not mind cold mornings, December and January are lovely. If you want the International Yoga Festival, come in March. If you want a quiet town and do not mind rain, the monsoon can work.

Rishikesh weather month by month

Rishikesh sits at about 340 m (1,120 ft) above sea level. It is where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills. That low height is why summers here are hot, even though the mountains are close.

"Rainy days" means days with a real amount of rain.

Which months are best for a yoga teacher training?

A teacher training is different from a holiday. You practise two or three times a day for one to seven weeks. So the weather matters more. Here is how we rate each month for a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh.

RatingMonthsWhy
EasiestOctober, November, February, MarchDry, sunny, comfortable all day. Good sleep. Outdoor practice is easy.
Very goodApril, December, late SeptemberApril gets hot in the afternoon. December is cold at dawn, though our halls are heated. Late September can still bring showers.
Doable with planningJanuary, May, JuneJanuary is the coldest. May and June are hot. All are fine if you prepare.
HardestJuly, AugustHeavy rain, damp clothes, and travel delays. Quieter, but you need patience.

Our batches start every month of the year. The 200-hour and 300-hour courses start on the 5th and 15th of each month. The 100-hour course starts on the 2nd and 15th. Aerial teacher training and our retreats start every Monday. So you can choose the month first, and the dates will follow.

Rishikesh weather in December: what to expect

December in Rishikesh is cool and mostly dry. Days reach about 21°C (70°F), and nights drop to about 7°C (45°F). There is usually only one rainy day in the month. Middays are sunny and pleasant. Early mornings and evenings are cold, and most houses here are not heated the way homes in Europe or North America are. Our campus is the exception: the yoga halls are heated for every class, and every room comes with a heated blanket.

Here is what that means for your day at a yoga school:

  • The first class is at 6:00 AM. At that hour it is close to the coldest part of the night. Wear a warm layer and socks for the walk over; the hall itself is heated, so you can take them off as you warm up.
  • The middle of the day is the best part. Sit in the sun during breaks. Do your reading and homework outside.
  • Evenings cool down fast after sunset. Bring a fleece or a light down jacket for evening meditation.
  • Christmas and New Year are busy. Many travellers come to Rishikesh then. Book flights early if you are flying in late December.

Is winter (December to February) a good time for yoga in Rishikesh?

Yes. The mornings are cold outside, but our yoga halls are heated and every room has a heated blanket, so the cold stays outdoors. Winter is dry and sunny, and the town is calmer than in spring.

January is the coldest month, with nights around 6°C (43°F). February warms up quickly. By the end of February, mornings are cool rather than cold.

The main thing is clothes for the walks between the hall, the dining area and town. You need layers, not one heavy coat. Inside, the practice hall is heated, and you will still see stacks of blankets there. Students use them for meditation and for the final relaxation at the end of class. At night, the heated blanket in your room does the rest.

Is spring (February to April) a good time?

Yes. Spring is one of the easiest times to train. February and March have warm days, cool nights and very little rain. April is warmer, with afternoons in the low to mid 30s °C.

March is also the festival month. Maha Shivaratri, the International Yoga Festival and Holi often all fall in March (see the festival table below). The town is lively and busier, so book your place a little earlier if you want March.

Can I do yoga in Rishikesh in summer (May and June)?

Yes, but it is hot. In May and June, average highs are about 36°C (97°F), and some days are hotter. Afternoons are the hardest part. Mornings and evenings are still good for practice.

A teacher training timetable already fits the heat quite well. On our 200-hour course, practice starts at 6:00 AM, and there is a long rest and self-study block from about 12:00 to 3:30 PM. You practise in the cooler hours and rest in the hottest ones. (Timings can shift a little by season.)

  • Drink water all day, not just in class. Add electrolytes if you sweat a lot.
  • Wear loose cotton or linen. Cover your head in the sun.
  • Think about your room. Cooling is different in each room type, so ask us which rooms have A/C before you book for May or June. Compare the rooms in our guide to dorm vs shared vs private rooms.
  • Ganga Dussehra (13 June 2027) and the International Day of Yoga (21 June every year) both fall in June.

Should I do a yoga course in Rishikesh during the monsoon?

You can, but go in with open eyes. July and August are the wettest months, with about 400–450 mm of rain and 15–16 rainy days each. The monsoon usually reaches Uttarakhand in the last week of June. In 2025 it covered the whole state on 24 June, and in 2024 on 28 June. It usually pulls back in late September or early October. In 2025 it left on 26 September, and in 2024 on 2 October.

Our courses keep running through the monsoon. Here is the honest picture:

The good sideThe hard side
The hills are deep green and the waterfalls are full.Rain can last for hours. Clothes and mats take a long time to dry.
Fewer tourists. The town is much quieter.River rafting is usually paused in the monsoon, and it can be stopped any time the Ganga runs high.
Yoga continues as normal in a covered hall.Mountain roads can close for a while after landslides. Day trips may be cancelled.
Cooler than May and June on rainy days.It is humid. Mosquitoes are more common, so bring repellent.
A good test of a calm, steady practice. The Kanwar Yatra (usually July or August) brings huge crowds of pilgrims and heavy traffic around Rishikesh and Haridwar.

Our advice: if you choose July or August, plan an extra buffer day for travel, and see the rain as part of the experience, not something that went wrong.

Is October a good time to visit Rishikesh?

Yes. October is one of the best months of the year. The monsoon has ended, the skies clear, and the hills are still green from the rain. Days are about 30°C (86°F) and nights cool down to about 17°C (63°F). There are only about two rainy days in the month.

November is even drier, with almost no rain at all. It is cooler too: around 25°C (77°F) by day and 10°C (50°F) at night. Together, these two months are the easiest time to do a full teacher training here. Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on 8 November in 2026.

September is the in-between month. Early September can still be quite wet. By late September, the rain usually becomes light and broken.

Festivals and events in Rishikesh by month

Festivals add a lot to a trip, but they also bring crowds. Hindu festival dates follow the lunar calendar and move each year, so check a local calendar before you book.

You can move in the day before your course starts. Day 1 begins at 6:00 AM.

Also leave time for your visa. Most students use the Indian e-Tourist Visa. Read our India visa guide for yoga teacher training before you book flights.
